Hope After Meth

The Kind of Hope You Only Find With a Bible in a Jail Cell

The flashing red and blue lights outside Daniel Borris’ house signaled to the neighborhood that life as he knew it was about to collapse.

Inside, authorities uncovered a meth lab while Daniel sat trapped in a reality distorted by addiction, paranoia, and exhaustion.

By that point, 25 years into his addiction, drugs had completely consumed his life. He was hallucinating, barely sleeping, rapidly losing weight, and spiraling through a violent cycle of crime and self-destruction in the pursuit of his next high.

He was completely at the mercy of methamphetamine’s impact on the neural pathways in his brain.

Finding God

“I was told more than once that what my life had become was God’s rightful judgment and what I deserved for all my rebellion, drinking, drug abuse, and blatant sin,” Daniel shared.

It wasn’t until he spent a year in a small jail cell that he started to believe otherwise.

“There was a Bible in my cell, and I began to read it several hours a day. God spoke to me through His word in Jeremiah 29:11: ‘Danny, I know the thoughts that I think toward you, thoughts of peace and not of evil, plans to give you a future and a hope. Call upon Me, pray to Me, and I will listen to you. Seek Me and find Me, search for Me with all your heart, and I will be found. I will bring you back from your captivity.’”

For years, Daniel had believed the lie that he was too far gone — that the destruction addiction had caused in his life was proof that God had abandoned him.

But alone in that jail cell, reading Scripture for hours each day, he realized that God is faithful even when we are not.

Overcoming Addiction

Daniel was raised in a hostile household when his father drank. The only love he felt was from his Christian mother. He remembers no relationship or physical affection from his father, only beatings and verbal abuse. He grew up without experiencing the kind of love and affection every child needs during early development.

“My great-grandfather had never shown love to my grandfather, who had never shown love to my father, who was, in turn, unloving toward me,” Daniel explained. “I desperately needed someone or something in my life to give me the love that I was missing.”

Daniel falsely found love in his drug addiction before establishing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

“I used to fear meeting Jesus and facing His judgment. I knew I had a ‘call on my life’ that I had not fulfilled,” Daniel shared. “But I am no longer that person. Today, I am a graduate of the Hope is Alive program with seven years of sobriety, and my life has been radically changed. I now serve on staff as their Volunteer Coordinator, where I get to help others just like me meet Jesus Christ.”
